Environmental Sustainability at Honda
Honda Canada prioritizes environmental sustainability in every way they can, from the vehicles they manufacture to the facilities they are created in. As a leader, Honda Canada recognizes their responsibility to pave the road towards a greener future. Our efforts are demonstrated by our current fleet that emits less CO2than the industry average! But this is just a start, our goal is to have electrified vehicles make up two thirds of our sales worldwide. In 2000, we were the first to offer a hybrid model and today we've stepped it up even more with our selection of Insight, Clarity and Accord Hybrid models. So whatever your needs may be, we have you covered!
Every decision made is shaped by four principles to ensure our zero waste initiative is fulfilled. We pledge to recycle and conserve resources in every stage of our products' lifecycle, in doing so we are able to cut manufacturing emissions by 25%. We pledge to find better ways to recycle and dispose of waste produced by our products.
Our vehicles have maintained 90% design recyclability since 2004. We pledge to be responsible for the health of our people and our environment. One of our plants is being upgraded so it can deliver a 44% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. We pledge to acknowledge the effect we have on our environment and lead by example in our society. We demonstrate our commitment to this by being one of the first North American automakers to gain ISO 14001 certification. ISO 14001 is the international standard that organizations follow to ensure they are doing everything possible to address environmental risks.
This passion for the environment comes straight from the top, our Honda Canada Headquarters do several things to promote environmental sustainability behind the scenes. They optimize daylight and outdoor views for employees, as well as planting over 2,700 perennials around the property to help combat greenhouse gases. We have 40 EV chargers located at our offices across Canada for the public to use, and we encourage all of our staff to do their part by carpooling! We've also installed in-floor heating systems to our offices to reduce the amount of energy we use.
Due to innovative features like a heat-reflective roof to keep the building cool, channels that filter waste out of our sewer system, and irrigation techniques that collect rainwater to help maintain our grounds, we were able to use 33% less energy than same-sized office buildings. We were also able to use 89% less water use than similar office buildings and nearly all of our waste was diverted from landfills in 2017.
Honda's vision is to have blue skies for our children and they play a role in getting there by partnering with the Honda Canada Foundation to donate over two million dollars to organizations that focus on conservation. One of the organizations we work closely with is Forest Recovery Canada and their "One Honda. One Tree." Campaign. Over the last 14 years we have supported the planting of 200,000 trees across Canada!
